A memorial complex commemorating the victims of the Armenian Genocide opened in Almelo, Holland

On the event of the 99th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide a memorial complex commemorating the 1,5 million of innocent victims was unveiled in the city of Almelo, Netherlands. The construction of the unique memorial complex started in 2013
The memorial built in the land owned by the Armenian Apostolic Church, was created in accordance with the architectural style of Armenian churches. 16 khachkars (memorial cross-stones) were made of tufa brought from Armenia. The head of the Department of Foreign Relations of the Municipality of Yerevan David Gevorgyan taking part in the official opening ceremony, read the address of the Mayor of Yerevan Taron Margaryan, “It has been proved many times that in the decisively important moments of the history of the Armenian people we had many friends worldwide who accepted and gave shelters to thousands of Armenians deprived of the right and opportunity to live in their homeland. And this day is another opportunity to thank everybody”. David Gevorgyan put a wreath at the memorial on behalf of the Mayor. More than five thousand our compatriots arrived from the Armenian community of the Netherlands and other European countries, representatives of different national organizations took part in the event. The victims of the Armenian Genocide were commemorated by the representatives of the Parliament of Holland, of the city authorities of Almelo, by the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Armenia to the Netherlands Dzyunik Aghajanyan, by art and science figures. The spiritual leader of the Armenian Apostolic church in the Netherlands Bishop Arshak took part in the event and served the requiem liturgy.
