16.07.2014
Chaired by Prime Minister Hovik Abrahamyan, the Women’s Council by the Prime Minister held today a regular meeting in the Office of Government.
The Council first discussed the 5th and 6th periodic reports on Armenia’s compliance with the UN Convention on Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women.
The meeting next discussed progress in the Ministry for Foreign Affairs-coordinated work on drafting the documents as implemented by the Interdepartmental Commission, which was established in 2012 under the Prime Minister’s decree.
After the Council members had exchanged views and comments, the Prime Minister summarized the debate asking the working group to finalize the documents, account taken of all the proposals and recommendations made at the meeting.
Another item on the agenda was the development of a national mechanism to improve the women’s status and provide for equality between men and women in the Republic of Armenia. In this context, the Council looked at ways of revitalizing the Council’s activities, reconsidering approaches, building capacity and a number of other issues.
The Prime Minister suggested discussing and submitting recommendations by the end of this September aimed at enhancing the effectiveness of the Council.
“We are interested in increasing women’s participation and involvement both in the socio-political and economic spheres. Specific steps have already been implemented to this end and the process must be continued,” the head of government concluded.
