Writers Awarded Prime Minister’s Commemorative Medal
04.07.2014
Prime Minister Hovik Abrahamyan attended a ceremonious event, dated to Armenia Writers’ Union 80th anniversary at Paronian State Musical Comedy Theater.
Addressing the Union with congratulatory remarks, the Prime Minister stated in part, “This Jubilee is a milestone in the social and cultural life of Armenia. The Union has played an invaluable role in our spiritual development, the promotion of ethnic traditions and the creation of a patriotic ideology. Your creative path was not an easy one, but our writers have managed to keep their stance of an intellectual dedicated homeland.”
Hovik Abrahamyan noted that the Union was founded in a difficult period through the efforts of Yeghishe Charents, Axel Bakunts., Avetik Isahakyan, Derenik Demirchyan and others. The next generation of writers built on their creative traditions both in the Soviet times and after independence.
“Our literature and the country, as a whole, appear to be in quite a new situation, facing problems and challenges that are both of old and new: old, because literature has always focused on the inner man - his sufferings and hopes; new, because globalization has changed our perceptions and understandings. Your task is to artistically reflect those new conditions and the reality, prioritizing Homeland’s and its citizens’ interests,” the Prime Minister said.
The head of government expressed confidence that, strong with great creative potential in the face of today’s poets and prose writers, the Union will live up to the task.
Hovik Abrahamyan stressed that despite the unprecedented advance in new technologies and electronic media, the printed book will always remain a loyal companion, contributing to the reader’s intellectual and spiritual development.
Assuring that the Government will do its utmost to back the Union, the Premier wished the writers ever new creative achievements and good health.
For significant contribution to Armenian literature, Hovik Abrahamyan awarded commemorative medals to novelists Vahagn Mughnetsyan, Nelly Shahnazaryan, Satenik Mkrtchyan, Tadevos Tonoyan, Vahan Sevan and Rafael Sahakyan. The head of government also donated a service car to the Writers’ Union.
