27.03.2014
President Serzh Sargsyan today received the delegation of the Subcommittee on NATO Partnership of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly Political Committee.
The President welcomed the guests to our country noting that such visits afford a good opportunity to familiarize with Armenia’s challenges and concerns, as well as to discuss issues of reciprocal interest concerning the regional developments.
Serzh Sargsyan stressed the importance of cooperating with NATO at a parliamentary level which, according to the President, is the important part of the relations between Armenia and NATO. The interlocutors stated with satisfaction that the delegation of the National Assembly of Armenia to the NATO Parliamentary Assembly plays an active role in different committees’ works, as well as in such important events as the Rose-Roth series of seminars.
The President of Armenia highly appreciated the effective and constructive cooperation with NATO in all the partnership areas. According to the President, the political dialogue with NATO is of continual character: Armenia actively participates in the peacekeeping missions led by NATO in Kosovo and Afghanistan; our country has joined the NATO Building Integrity conception in order to effectively deal with corruption in armed forces; works are being carried out to launch a NATO Trust Fund, which will help to eliminate worthless military equipment and to support Armenia in building mine clearing capacities. The interlocutors were sure that all of that was proved by the advanced and comprehensive agenda which had been shaped as a result of Armenia’s close and years-long cooperation with NATO. The latter substantially contributed to improving and modernizing Armenia’s defense and security system.
In the context of the development of the Armenia-NATO partnership, President Serzh Sargsyan and the delegation members of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly touched upon the Individual Partnership Action Plan.
At the meeting, the interlocutors also exchanged views on regional security issues, the settlement process of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, the Armenian-Turkish relations, the Armenia-EU cooperation, as well as on issues concerning Armenia’s membership process in the Customs Union.
