PM Gets Acquainted With Malayan Eye-Care Center’s Development Programs

 Prime Minister Tigran Sargsyan visited the Sergey Malayan Ophthalmologic Center of Yerevan to get acquainted with services and development programs.

The Center’s experts carry out vitreo-retinal surgery, cornea transplantation and prosthesis, laser treatment of glaucoma and congenital disorders, eyelids and other plastic operations. The annual number of surgeries and other procedures is 4500.

The center is currently developing refractive surgery, which deals with myopia and long-sightedness. A variety of nanotechnologies are being applied to treat active population’s eyesight disorders. Some 1950 laser surgeries have been carried out since the Center’s foundation.

At this point, the department is a nationwide leader in this field. The hospital is the key partner of the Armenian-American “Eye Project” program.

Under the aforementioned project, the Center has been is furnished with modern equipment, medication. A mobile hospital is up, which travels throughout the regions and provides diagnosis and surgeries for vulnerable population. Over 50 thousand examinations, 10 thousand plain surgeries and 4 thousand laser surgeries have been carried out in the period under review.

As from 2007, the Center co-operates with the American Glaukos, which performs valve testing of surgical treatment of glaucoma.

Taking into account Shirak marz residents’ poor health conditions, the Center has established a branch in Gyumri town. A surgery ward has been upgraded and modernized in White Hospital.

In its capacity of largest working and military expertise center, the Center receives between 5 and 5.5 thousand servicemen a year, 2.5 times as many as do all the other institutions altogether.

Established in 1978, the Center has some 249 employees and is the training base of the Medical University after Mkhitar Heratsi and Haybusak University.
