Rasmussen: NATO has no intention to interfere in Syria conflict

24.03.2012

NATO does not intend to interfere in the Syrian conflict, said the alliance’s secretary-general Anders Fog Rasmussen on Saturday, ITAR-TASS reported.
The secretary-general stressed that NATO does not plan interfering in Syrian affairs. In contrast to Libya, the situation is quite different there, he continued. The alliance had a mandate of the UN Security Council at the time and the support of the region’s countries, he noted, speaking at the forum German Marshall Fund.
The NATO chief also emphasized that the UN mandate was aimed at protecting Libyan civil population from aggression by the Muammar Gaddafi regime. Rasmussen added that responsibility for restoration of that country rests with the UN. The alliance is ready to help the country in the military sphere, given the country’s authorities request this, the secretary-general noted.
